The 'Poop Cruise,' officially the Carnival Triumph cruise ship, became a global spectacle in February 2013 when an engine room fire knocked out power and disabled the ship's plumbing system. What was intended as a four-day getaway to Cozumel, Mexico, quickly descended into a nightmare as raw sewage backed up into cabins, hallways, and even the dining areas. "The headlines painted a picture, but they didn't tell the whole story," says Ben Rumney, series producer for 'Trainwreck.' "We wanted to understand what it was really like to be on that ship, to experience that level of discomfort and uncertainty. We interviewed passengers, crew members, and even Carnival executives to get a comprehensive understanding of what went wrong and how it impacted everyone involved."
The 'Trainwreck' episode promises to delve into the technical failures that led to the disaster, as well as the decisions made by Carnival Cruise Lines in the aftermath. The series also explores the psychological toll the experience took on the passengers, many of whom are still grappling with the trauma years later. "It wasn't just about the overflowing toilets," Rumney explains. "It was about the feeling of being trapped, the fear of the unknown, and the sense that the company wasn't doing enough to help them."
The 'Poop Cruise' episode is the latest installment in the 'Trainwreck' anthology, which previously explored events like Woodstock '99 and the Astroworld tragedy. By focusing on the human element and providing in-depth analysis, the series aims to offer a fresh perspective on headline-making events that went terribly wrong.
