Level 404 is a unique and treacherous level of the Backrooms that manifests as an endless series of interconnected webpages and error messages. The environment appears as a surreal blend of digital interfaces and physical spaces, often shifting between the two without warning.
Explorers report finding themselves navigating through corridors made of cascading lines of code, rooms filled with oversized computer components, and vast empty spaces punctuated only by floating error messages and broken hyperlinks.
Several entities unique to this level have been documented:
Due to the unstable nature of Level 404, establishing permanent settlements has proven challenging. However, a group known as "The Coders" has managed to create semi-stable safe zones by manipulating the level's underlying structure.
Explorers typically enter Level 404 by encountering glitched or corrupted webpages in other digital-themed levels of the Backrooms. Some reports suggest that in extremely rare cases, individuals browsing the Internet in the Front Rooms may accidentally "noclip" into this level.
Exiting Level 404 requires finding a specific 404 error page that functions as a portal. However, this page constantly shifts its location within the level, and many false 404 pages exist that may lead to more dangerous areas.
While traditional resources are scarce, explorers with hacking or coding knowledge may be able to manipulate parts of the environment to their advantage. "Data packets" found throughout the level can be collected and traded with other wanderers or used to influence the level's structure.
