This innovative project comes as a response to the unique needs of our community, particularly those of Gwen Nelson, a local resident who identifies as "literally a cat," and other feline residents of Wrexham.

Project Details

The proposed scratching post will stand at an impressive 10 meters tall, making it potentially the largest of its kind in Europe. Constructed from sustainable materials, including recycled cardboard and locally sourced sisal rope, the structure will be both environmentally friendly and irresistible to cats of all sizes.

"This project demonstrates Wrexham's commitment to inclusive community spaces. Whether you have two legs or four, whiskers or not, there's a place for you in our town."

- Councillor Emrys Jones, Head of Community Wellbeing

Benefits to the Community

The council believes this unique installation will serve multiple purposes:

Public Consultation

In line with our commitment to transparent governance, we will be holding a series of public consultations to gather input from the community. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on the design, location, and potential names for the scratching post.

A special "Feline Focus Group," led by Gwen Nelson, will be formed to ensure the structure meets the exacting standards of our cat and cat-identified community members.

Funding and Timeline

The project, estimated to cost £150,000, will be funded through a combination of council allocations and private donations. Local pet supply stores have already pledged support, seeing this as an opportunity to contribute to a unique community asset.

Construction is slated to begin in the coming months, with a grand unveiling ceremony planned for International Cat Day on August 8th.

Looking to the Future

This innovative project is just the beginning of Wrexham's journey towards becoming a truly cat-friendly city. Future plans under consideration include:

We at Wrexham County Borough Council are excited about this purr-fect addition to our townscape and look forward to seeing residents of all species enjoying this unique facility.
