ACE found in Ocarina of Time - Zelda Forums

Note: This thread is from an alternate timeline where Ocarina of Time was released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Guys, you won't believe what I just discovered! I think I've found an Arbitrary Code Execution (ACE) exploit in Ocarina of Time for the SNES!

Here's how it works:

  1. Get to Hyrule Castle Town as child Link
  2. Talk to the running man exactly 64 times
  3. Play the Song of Storms backwards
  4. Quickly open and close the inventory 16 times
  5. Walk into the corner near the entrance to the Temple of Time

If done correctly, the game will glitch out and you'll see some weird graphical artifacts. But here's the crazy part: you can now input button combinations to execute arbitrary code!

I've managed to write a simple "Hello World" program using this method. Here's the code:

A, B, X, Y, L, R, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, START, SELECT

This will print "Hello World" in the top left corner of the screen!

I'm still experimenting with what else can be done. Has anyone else discovered this? The possibilities seem endless!

Wow, HylianHacker93! This is an incredible find! I just tried it and it worked perfectly. The potential for speedrunning is huge!

I wonder if we could use this to access areas early or even skip entire dungeons. Has anyone tried teleporting to different locations using this method?

Also, I'm curious about the technical aspects. How do you think this exploit works? Could it be related to the SNES's memory management, or is it more likely a bug in the game's code?

Hello Zelda fans,

We at Nintendo are aware of the recently discovered glitch in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. We appreciate the enthusiasm and creativity of our fanbase in exploring the game.

However, we must advise against using this exploit. It may lead to unexpected behavior, corrupt save files, or even damage to your console. We are currently investigating the issue and plan to address it in a future revision of the game cartridge.

In the meantime, we encourage players to enjoy the game as intended. The legend of the Hero of Time is meant to be experienced through the carefully crafted storyline and gameplay mechanics designed by our team.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support of The Legend of Zelda series.
